Ass of the week

…and while we’re on the subject of pet peevery:

4 Very Short Articles Need to be Written (Downtown)

Reply to: igotyour$5rightherebuddy@craigslist.org

I need 4 very short articles written tonight…only 300 words each.
  • it’s NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests
  • Compensation: $5-$10

I have two words for you "rush fee."

The person who posted this ad obviously thinks it’s nothing to whip up four 300-worders. If he had a clue he’d know it takes time for a good writer to create four original articles. The ad in question was posted at 6:16 PM. Getting close to your deadline, buddy? Need someone to step in and take over? Next time you might want to plan it a little better.

Here’s a clue. If you want someone to handle a gig on a rush you’ll probably need to step up the compensation a bit. $5 to $10 for four articles doesn’t even begin to cover it. Since you have no clue of what real writers do, let me lay it out for you in simple steps:

  1. Communicate with the client.
  2. Research topic.
  3. Outline article.
  4. Write article.
  5. Proofread and edit article.
  6. Turn in within my rush deadline.
  7. Communicate with client again.
  8. Times four.

Tell me again how that’s worth $5 to $10? Because I’m not calculating it that way at all. I think you’re missing a zero…or two.

Ass.

You know, of course, that the really pathetic thing is he’ll probably get somebody to write the articles for that price. It’s pretty amazing how cheaply some novice writers will work just to get something published. I’m curious…what do you thing thos those four articles would be worth in a fair market? This is assuming that there wasn’t massive research involved…mostly just writing.

Sorry about the typos and the double posting; I’m a techno-bonehead.

I’m a freelance writer, and I couldn’t make it through the week without stopping in on your blog.

The mass production of crap content, particularly for use on the internet, is turning our once dignified portal of knowledge and learning into a Dollar Store full of cheap and useless crap that you can’t even recycle properly.

Well, ok. TMZ doesn’t help either.

    Thanks for the laugh.

Wow. Just wow. This is why good writers like me have a hard time making a living.
