Who is Joe Schmo Anyway?
“Prefer being published on PAPER opposed to joe shmoe’s blog?
Date: 2007-06-06, 8:15PM EDT”Great, then why don’t you write for Spare Change? We are a bi-weekly street paper with a circulation of 10,000. We are looking for reporters to cover news around Boston and the state with a progressive edge.
“This is a great place to get clips and be part of a community.
- Compensation: no pay”
Is it more preferable to be published for a local newspaper or a blog? Especially when you consider the newspaper is only circulated among a particular area, while Joe Schmo has a potential audience of millions. Plus, does the aforementioned Mr. Schmo pay? If so, it makes his the more attractive opportunity. Also, a paper may have a circulation of 10,000, but it doesn’t mean each paper is actually being read by someone. How many papers are tossed into trash cans, lining the kitty pan, or worse, sent back still in its bundle to the Spare Change circulation department? Just a few things to think about.

I worked in Boston for many years and at that time, Spare Change was a publication written, edited, produced, and sold entirely by the homeless. I’m not sure how the project was funded, but their motto was “help the homeless help themselves” and the operation was well-respected. So I was surprised to see them advertising this way. Looks like they just want volunteers, which is fine, but they should say that.
