But wait…it gets better

by admin on October 29th, 2006

A few minutes ago, I vented my wrath at this ad, found on FreelanceWriting.com. Further perusal of this site, thickens the plot even more. On the same site, I found another ad by the same company, Hope Castles.

"Hope Castles Freelancing is now hiring non-paying keyword writers for variety of freelance projects. We’re looking for writers who can write on a SEO level as well as follow special guidelines from the clients. This job is non-paying so therefore, there’s no payment for this position because we’re just started out ourselves. We’re seeking non-paying writers to help Hope Castles Freelancing grow; this is a great opportunity for new writers to make a name for themselves. Please contact Michelle to get started today as a keyword writer."

She really it makes it sound like she’s doing writers a favor, doesn’t she? She’s just starting out, so she’ll accept volunteers because, after all, they’re helping her to build her business and we all know what a great cause that is. So great that writers will be able to make a name for themselves through her company, which no one has heard of. Though this was quite interesting, it indeed gets better.

"Let Hope Castles Freelancing Write Your Next Project

"Hope Castles Freelancing is seeking new clients to help our company grow. Our company specializes in varieties of freelance writing projects. We work directly with our clients to meet our clients’ needs by asking them a few questions about their project in what they’re looking for. Our company is equipped with highly professional writers to help you with your projects. We guarantee that our work is original and affordable however, we also respect our clients’ privacy, and we will never source out your information to other companies. We believe on building our clients trust with the work we do for them. We like to keep our clients coming back to us in the near future.

"However, here at Hope Castles freelancing, ‘writing, and researching’ is our company number one motto. Our talented writers, whom all possess a great deed of knowledge in there writing field, is required to pass through our editors’ before sending in the actual project. We will send three emails letting you know how your project is being handled in when you as the client would like for your project to be complete. This is done to keep our clients inform about their projects. We deliver on time we also offer a turnaround time of 38/72 hours on all articles. Here is a small list of our service that Hope Castles Freelancing Offers."

Let’s forget for a minute the brilliant writing. Let’s forget how anyone seeking serious article writing is sure to read phrases such as "We work directly with our clients to meet our clients’ needs by asking them a few questions about their project in what they’re looking for" and "Our talented writers, whom all possess a great deed of knowledge in there writing field, is required to pass through our editors’ before sending in the actual project" and sign them on the spot. Marvel if you will at the brilliant work of the editors. And then scroll down.

"Pricing Scale

"Up to 250 Words - $2
251 - 400 Words - $4
401 - 600 Words - $6
601 - 800 Words - $8
801 - 1000 Words -$10

"5% discount - 6 - 99 articles
15% discount - 100 - 199 articles
20% discount - 200 plus articles"

Apparently it’s ok for the Powers That Be at Hope Castles to receive payment for articles, as paltry as that pay might be. After all, they’re not the ones doing all the work. The writers who are getting nothing for their 10 to 50 articles each week, they don’t deserve pay, do they? Besides, Hope Castles is building a fine reputation, and really, what freelancer wouldn’t jump at that?

This is what’s wrong with the world of writing today. How dare you, Hope Castles! Are you telling me that you can’t even offer a few crumbs, a 50-50 split to your writers? You’re not offering a wonderful opportunity, you’re taking advantage, clear and simple. You’re convincing some poor schlub he needs to work for free to gain exposure and experience, yet charging for his work. Shame on you and your greed! Even the term paper mills offer a cut. Even the $2 guys pay something. You, Hope Castles, are slime an I am done wasting bandwidth on you.

ohgodohgodohgod… I can’t even get my mind around the total illiteracy of the “editors” at this “company.” The “we don’t pay you, but we get paid for your hard work” part, however, was a given.

And I thought I was all alone, tilting at windmills that turn out to be slimeballs who want the work/words without having to pay. Huzzah for you.

“Hope Castles Freelancing is now hiring non-paying keyword writers …”

Um…sounds to me like they want professional writers that won’t pay for the privilege of writing for HCF! And just what exactly IS a “keyword writer”?

I just wonder how come writers are ever so often expected to work for free and be grateful for “the opportunity”? Do you ever see ads saying “clean my home for free, you’ll get experience and my gratitude”, or “be my secretary for free and you’ll get a pat on the shoulder and my thanks, isn’t that great?”
Disgusting, just disgusting. I thought slavery had been abolished long ago, at least in this part of the world…

They prey on the predictable vanity of wannabe writers, who think seeing their name in print is so cool that they’ll do it for nothing. Which makes it that much harder for real writers to get decently paying work.

Oh - My - God is all I can say. Cheers on such a great blog.

I thought I should also mention that a week or so ago I stumbled upon a hilarious ad that I found on Craig’s List. The man was seeking a writer to write personal ads / profiles for him for dating websites he had just joined. Not just that but he also needed someone to answer the emails he would get from such websites. He did not mention whether the writer would be dating instead of him. Now we’ll never know…

    Hilarious.
